Want to print a new publication; it takes 4 years worth of TOMTS to have enough. We do not have enough problems for a primary book. We can do an elementary book with primary & elementary
It will take approximately 1800-2000 dollars per book to format per Joe’s estimate.
Once the costs are paid then these books are pure profits.
Currently we have over 400 of the Elementary & Intermediate Problem Solving. We have about 50 Secondary Problem Box books left.
We cannot wait until these are gone to order more.
Indicate what grade level these books are targeting example (Designed for Grades 6-8)
A motion was made by Susan Fisher Alexander and seconded to authorize Joe Spooner to put together a new addendum to the Elementary Problem Box (K-5 edition) of the Problem Solving Book in the range of $1800 to $2000 with the limit being $2000. The motion passed.

Old Business
· Mathematical Education Trust (MET) Grant Recipients: tabled motion Patty Sandoz & Susan Fisher-Alexander
What are we going to do with the left over money? (about $450.)
It is a 2 year grant and a report will be due to NCTM at the end of the 2nd year.
One proposal is to find 14 new people for 2008 -2009
That each area nominate 1 MET-funded OCTM membership for 2008 -2009 with the same stipulations as before
A motion was made by Jill Sumerlin and seconded that each Area Rep submit 1 name to be funded out of MET money with the same stipulations as last year and each area rep will later submit an additional name that may be funded with left over money on a first come first serve basis. The motion passed.
A motion was made by Jill Sumerlin and seconded to amend the motion to strike the lottery with a second round procedure as provided by Patty. The amendment passd..
· Constitutional Cleanup Committee (CCC) Patty Sandoz
The reason for this is to clean up the entire Constitution at one time.
Molly Smith, Patty Sandoz, & Jill Sumerlin will share their ideas with each other on March 1st
This will be shared with the Board at August meeting
The final Board approval will be at the fall meeting and then submitted to TOMT by November 1st.
· Bonding Treasurer / Two Signatures Ross Eells
Ross has found a company in Spokane to bond us for up to $500,000. He submitted a crime application and resume. He has not heard back from them.
Ross will have more information at the spring Board meeting.
New Business
Due to a change in Oregon laws we had to file for nonprofit status about a year ago. Ross recently received a letter from the Attorney General about the dissolution of our organization. Where does our money go because the Constitution said National of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the application said to Northwest Mathematics Conference (NWMC).
Ross will fix this and let us know.
Should the policy be amended to fund four people, rather than two, to attend the Affiliates Leadership Conference?
The current policy is too hazy and puts uncomfortable pressure on the Treasurer.
The belief of the financial committee that met in April 2007 is that the President, NCTM Rep, a TOMT Editor and one other person.
One ideas is if we send more than 4 then we can bring build our young leadership and you can connect with people of same jobs.
Is there a criteria for the unnamed person to go? It has been the President’s decision.
Discussion about bringing a spouse and then how does the cost change.
In the last few years the ALC has changed to fewer numbers of conferences.
Do we want to limit the number of people or do we want to set a dollar amount?
One idea for the unnamed person is to have a rotating basis. One year the Secretary, next year the Treasure, and so on.
The bonding & camaraderie is very important for this conference.
Have a set amount of money and then decide the amount people attending based on how much money
Some groups have set rates based on cities
Proposal to have a lunch meeting and report back.
11:51 -12:30 Lunch
Lunch Meetings Report Out
Cathy Brown should be given OCTM lifetime membership and that all Hall of Fame members should be given this as well. These people will all be invited to the next OML awards to receive their award.
A motion was made by Andrea Lane and seconded to award all Hall of Fame recipients, past, present & future of OCTM to be presented with a life time membership at OML awards ceremony. The motion passed.
To track years of service make a list of Board members using TOMTs to create a list of people who have served on the Board and their years of service. Patty has a list of the position and the person in that position for every year since 1984.
Certificates for every 5 years of service on OCTM Board is one idea.
Part of the Historian job to keep track of this list of Board Members is one idea.
Ann & Andrea will work with Patty for this idea
We decided that the President, NCTM Representation, & TOMT Editor for sure, and then 1 3 more people based on funding. Then the President will use the following criteria: newly elected, new to the Board members, number of times gone, carpooling, motel pooling, & location
If there is money left over the money can be rolled over to the next year’s budget to send people.

Area Reports
· Area 1 Theresa Trotter & Lynn Bonser
Area 1 has some very active math groups. In Columbia County, the Math Academy continues to meet 5 times a year with representatives from all five districts in the county. This year the focus has been on unwrapping the power standards they identified as a group last year and writing formative assessments for those unwrapped standards. The group is facilitated by Sharron Selman and Pam Halvick. The program has been such a success that last year the county sent one representative from each district to the NCTM National Convention in Atlanta, GA. Some districts chose to foot the bill to send a second representative so that both elementary and secondary were represented. Clatsop County has begun a similar program facilitated by Lynn Bonser.
Another exciting thing happening with Area 1 members is the All Star Math competition sponsored by the Learning Outlet in Kelso, Washington. This year, students and teachers from St. Helens, Clatskanie and Rainier participated along with 14 Washington schools in a tournament of the All Star Math game. The game, invented by the owner of the Learning Outlet, is a strategy Board game involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Each classroom grades 3-6 in participating schools held their own competition. Classroom winners were then invited to the quarterfinals at Kelso High School on January 19. The semi-finals will be held January 26 and the finals will be held February 9. Last year’s sixth grade winner was from Clatskanie Elementary School and he received Blazer tickets as well as other merchandise for his prize.
· Area 2 Tari Querin
Family math nights coming up are at Marysville Elementary Jan.15, Maplewood Elementary Feb. 5, Chief Joseph Elementary in February, and Clark Elementary in April. Richmond Elementary had one Nov. 7.
Cheryl Ogburn shared that there have been more parent sessions called “Math and Muffins”, which focus on updating parents about math education today and what we are trying to achieve in our schools. There has been one at Alameda Elementary and there will be one at Glencoe Elementary and Hayhurst Elementary in February. These are split into two sessions, a k-2 and a 3-5 session.
Our teacher paid workshops at the elementary level have been targeting "diligence of instruction in mathematics". The focus is on things that we need to do each and every day to build capacity and fluency with number and numerical reasoning.
Rose Palmer shared that the Math TOSAs continue to support classroom teachers through site-based professional development, modeling lessons, and collaborative planning time with grade level teams. Rose and Nancy Low met with math building reps for their quarterly meeting. I had the opportunity to attend that meeting and share about OCTM, TOMT, OML, the NW Math Conference in Portland in the fall and the National Conference in Salt Lake, Utah in April. Each of the reps were given handouts and a letter with a membership form for the librarian and principal. They were reminded to follow up on any new teachers to Oregon reminding them they can have a free membership.
· Area 3 Shawna Dehler & Charlotte Ogle
Area 3 hosted a Family Math Night at McKay Elementary School on January 17th. McKay Elementary is a small school with an enrollment of about 380 students and attendance that night exceeded 100. Activities stretched from an exploratory kindergarten area to fraction games hosted by the fifth grade. The feedback was positive about the estimating jar with prizes attached, to the take home games.
Beaverton is asking the teachers for their feedback on a proposal to push up the adoption of a new math program in the district by one year. Beaverton is currently using Math Investigations for the past three years at the elementary level. If the adoption were to be pushed forward Beaverton would be implementing a new program by the fall of 2008.
· Area 4 Stephanie Legard & Marie Cramer
Several high school teachers from the Salem/Keizer School District have been attending Summer Leadership Workshops put on by College Prep Mathematics. These teachers are now in the process of training new staff hired to the district and/or are training teachers in other districts that have recently adopted the curriculum.
Nancy Anderson (retired?) will be working in Yoncalla, Oregon on Bridges training for K-3 teachers for the Math Learning Center on January 29 and March 20. On January 16 she did an "elapsed" time lesson for a third grade classroom at Eagle Creek, and then spent a short while with the 7-12 PDC showing some concrete fraction models. She was also in Myrtle Creek in December (again for the PDC) doing model lessons with pattern blocks (grade 5) and addition strategies (grade 2). Nancy is starting some work with the Grant K-8 Dual Language School in Salem which will include Bridges, Investigations, Number Corner, and a Family Math Night. In February, she will work with TAG students in the Salem Ed Foundation program for Saturday Academy (more to come).

· Area 6 Theresa Hilkey & Inga Perham
The Lane County ESD in Eugene will host a math games event January 29th, 4-6 pm. Teachers will get to share and play math games while consuming pizza and drinks (soft, I'm sure).
Lane County ESD is also hosting a TI-Navigator and TI-Nspire workshop on Tuesday, February 5th.
And finally, yup, Lane County ESD will host a Pizza, Pop, and Problems on Tuesday, February 26th from 4 to 6 pm.
We also had our last P^3 and had about 20 people- we discussed some great math problems as well as the standards and just helped each other professionally . We had a great representation from our rural schools who do not have the funding for much professional development - It was great to meet them and work through so many great goals.
We are also still working on updating our Area 6 notebooks, including getting contacts from the private schools in our areas.
· Area 7 Karen Ashcraft & Kim Clary
On State Wide In-service Day in October, a colleague and I were able to attend the State of Jefferson Math Conference. Francie and DJ did a spectacular job putting this all together. The presenters were top notch, the food was excellent, and the company even better. Thanks for hosting such a great event.
On the South Coast we are just gearing up after a wonderful holiday break. There are plans in the works for a P^3 as well as a Pi Day Celebration in March. We are all looking forward to these events.
The South Umpqua School District has been engaged in professional development with the PDC. Andy Johnson from the South Umpqua district office, says, “The training we have been receiving has led to increased interest from our teachers in learning better methods of teaching mathematics. We tend to teach in traditional ways …, however, now that teachers have been exposed to the Van de Walle book and seen some good presentations, they are interested in teaching for understanding…. Next year I plan to offer professional development to our staff based on Van de Walle ideas. After the OCTM trainings we have received, I expect those meetings to be well attended.”
New standards are having an impact. Many districts are examining standards and reviewing/revising curriculum, practice, and assessment.
Douglas County ESD has created a math cadre consisting of teachers from each district in the county. They are looking at what is being used in each district for math instruction, assessment, and intervention materials. They are considering the new math standards across elementary, middle and high school and discussing the new graduation requirements.
OMLI continues its influence as teacher leaders are holding professional development opportunities for their teams.
Elementary schools in Roseburg are working to build Professional Learning Teams where grade levels learn to examine data and learn best practices from one another. There are also book study opportunities in assessment and best practices.
Several schools are participating in math games and clubs, such as Sutherlin Middle School at Pentagames, Roseburg High School with the AtPac Math League, and grade level math clubs at Brockway Elementary.
· Area 8 DJ Muller & Ron Baker
I anticipate a P^3 for April in Klamath Falls targeting city elementary as our previous classes have focused on County schools. We continue to work with people from all around the state on the South Umpqua professional development project.
· Area 9 Andrea Lane & Diane Randgaard
No report
· Area 10 Dana Marlia & Cheri Clausen
Dr. James Tooke, EOU Professor of Mathematics, was selected to receive an Area Recognition Award. He is active in the GO MATH grant, supervising and instructing teachers. Penny Grotting, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Malheur ESD, was also selected for an area award. She has been a cheerful and generous supporter of our training opportunities, such as the P^3 sessions, and through her implementation of a summer institute for area teachers, we have had high quality, local presentations from groups such as the Teacher Development Group.
Ontario's superintendent and two principals attended a P^3 session held at May Roberts Elementary in November. This proved to be an invaluable time to have administrators experience what we consider to be a good model for math thinking and problem solving. Along with the teachers, they showed a keen interest when we reviewed changes in Oregon standards as influenced by NCTM's curriculum focal points.
A P^3 is planned for January 23rd in Baker City. Nanette Lehman, K/Reading Specialist, from Baker was one of our people selected for the MET grant and has already proven to be a wonderful choice! We wanted to make our workshop an opportunity for teachers to learn about the new standards, so during our P^3, Molly and Patty will speak about the new standards and answer any questions people might have.
· Area 11 Nancy Swarat & Susan Fisher-Alexander
Nancy and Susan are working hard to develop new questions for the TOMT Intermediate question box. It is quite a learning experience for them. February 28th, Thursday, Area 11 is hosting a Math Night for Teachers at the Vert in Pendleton. Teachers will have a chance to mingle and then attend two one-hour sessions to improve their math and their math teaching. Susan Talbot, area 11 active member, took the idea and ran with it. She has done a great job organizing the workshop. We are hoping to have PDUs for teachers that attend as well as great information. Area 11 reps are soliciting member nominations. to receive the Area rep awards. Nancy is working to get a new superintendent on Board with the need for strong math leadership.
· Area 12 Jane Osborne
· Area 13 Sarah Savage & Marla Barber
Area 13 has selected two people for the area recognition award. The first
one is Brian Goldman who works for the MESD as Measurement Specialist for
Student Assessment. Brian was nominated for his work assisting teachers
and working with mathematics assessment in recommending the new cut score
for the multiple choice test. The second person is Yuki Montieth, RMS
principal. Yuki stood up for her math teachers at math camp and has been
a key player in math reform in the district. She has made changes in her
school to specifically address need of the math department in their quest
to help students succeed.
Area 13 is also planning a P^3 for sometime in April.
· Area 14 Jennifer Bell & Elizabeth Warren
We're working on our OML invite list.
· Mailing Clerk Lois Costine
· OMEC Ann McMahon
· TOTOM Nancy Drickey
There is no news from TOTOM. The listserve has been relatively quiet and the next scheduled meeting isn’t until September.
· ODE: Curriculum
Salam Noor sent out an email stating the State Board of Education has decided to postpone the adoption of the 9-12 Math Standards and Instructional Material.
We do not have anyone in the ODE curriculum position as far as we know. The Math Content Panel has not yet finished their work for the connections & supporting documents and are unsure when they are going to meet again.
· ODE: Assessment Jim Leigh
Send your questions to Jim Leigh and he will respond to your questions within a few weeks.
Patty asked about when the new K-8 standards would be assessed. His response is probably 2010 2011.
He is also hearing talk about writing test items this summer to meet the new standards.
· Webmaestro Jackie Cooke
I have recently finished updates to:
· TOMT Cathy Bernhard & Jackie Cooke
Are you planning to enter the student art contest? We'd love to see a much larger turnout this time around.
Should we do something to honor Joe's 25 years of service, since inviting him to the awards ceremony won't work? (He will be in France during OML this year.) Does anyone have ideas about an appropriate way to recognize him?
We would love to receive more articles from our elementary teachers.
Look forward to a couple OMLI articles in the final issues.
We are beginning to plan for next year’s TOMTs. We always need ideas for new features and series and welcome suggestions. We would really encourage people who want to write a series of articles (either in a set of 3 or 6) and would encourage the author to attend the Writers’ Retreat.
With Board approval at the January meeting, we will begin to plan the fifth annual Writers’ Retreat. These Retreats have become one of our primary sources for articles and we hope Board members will give serious consideration to applying to attend. The Writers’ Retreat is traditionally held the day after OML
· Scholarship Brent Freeman
Nothing new to report.
· Historian Judy Johnson
· Contests Laura Lethe
Pentagames will be held on April 25 at 8 sites throughout Oregon. This is the 25th Anniversary of the contest and the executive Board is very thankful for all of the support that has been received by OCTM over the years.
The Oregon Invitational Mathematics Tournament for High School students will be held at Willamette University. The official date has not yet been posted on their website.
· OML Kristin Takano Becker, Theresa Totter & Theresa Hilkey
The Co-Chairs are very happy to report that we have a theme...the 2008 theme is Diving Deep Into Mathematics.
We appreciate the framework left for us by the previous OML Chairs and the evaluations provided us with some ideas of activities to include in this year's conference. Everything about Sunday, the first day of the conference remains except for the fact that we are adding an activity time after the Awards Ceremony. We're calling it Array of Area Activities-we haven't nailed down the specific activities, but felt it important that the areas have a chance to meet the night of the conference. KT^2 are about having fun in math so expect the activities to be game-like in nature. We are keeping Mingle Math, but focusing it on math games such as Blokus, All-Star Math, 24, Crypto, etc.
Professional Learning Communities is a hot topic right now and so we've decided to tweak the Book Study Sessions to be Grade Level learning communities. We plan to have an activity centered around deep unit planning utilizing resources such the Cathy Fosnot series, Van de Walle, and other books that the Board recommends. Our thought is to have these books available at the sessions...we're predicting that amongst all of us Board members that we'll be able to have quite a collection to use at the conference. One thought we have is that we can include the list of conference resources in the registration letter for participants to purchase on their own, if they so choose.
We hope to be able to tap into some folks who participated in OMLI to lead us during our "deep diving permit"...the thought is that they'd provide leadership in the model of teaching in depth to math standards.
Of course, we're keeping the State of the State. Our thought is that with the new K-8 standards and the "on-hold" 9-12 standards that there will be lots of questions about how the new standards impact us now and in the future.
Based on feedback from last year's evaluations, the SWAP groups were too big so we are working on reformatting the process so that the groups are smaller-perhaps, by grade level. Smaller groups will allow us to go deeper (fits with the theme, right?) into the activities.
And, finally, we're working on having a Math Research Forum. Patti, and hopefully one of us, will be attending a Forum in the Beaverton School District that we hope to get some ideas about formatting, etc. Our thought is that we'd have our forum focus on constructivist vs. traditional approaches to teaching and learning mathematics. Other possible topics include: nurturing new teachers, what research says about teaching in depth, examining textbook/instructional materials in light of the new standards.
Next steps for us include meeting with the rest of our team: Becky, Jolene, and Cherie and then continue to solidify plans. Count on us to be coming to the Board for help with facilitation, etc.
· Publicity Francie Bostwick
I have received copies of the Alumni publications that mentioned their respective alumni and the math ed award they received. I will be sharing these at the meeting. The nomination form for the 2008 math ed awards will be in the February/March issue of TOMT. Please be thinking of those outstanding individuals whom you might like to nominate. I will be asking for those interested in participating in the selection of this years’ candidates to let me know during our January meeting so I can send the nominees information out in email prior to and in preparation for our discussion and voting at the April Board meeting.

· Treasurer Ross Eells
If you look at the top of the balance sheet you will notice that our Long Term CD’s continue to earn very nice interest (+$30,000.) Our liquid assets have actually increased from November due to contributions, membership, and a very nice deposit of $3000 from The State of Jefferson Conference. Donations include $3500 from The Math Learning Center, Don Fineran’s annual birthday contribution and a very generous donation of $1000 from his son’s company in San Francisco.
One of our CD’s at MAPS will mature in February and I have already arranged for them to send me a check so that I can reinvest it in a CD at OnPoint. OnPoint now offers a savings account that offers an interest rate 1% higher than the Market Rate Savings where we kept our largest savings account. I transferred that account to the new FlexSmart Account which earns 2.5% annually instead of 1.5%.
Our Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics investment with Financial West Group lost $15,000 since October. I will be calling the broker next week to get some more information.
I have been dealing with a local insurance company about bonding. I submitted a “Crime Application” as well as my resume to get a quote. This company will insure up to $500,000.
· Secretary Jennifer Cox
On January 24th I chaired a Family Math Night at my school. Hopefully all went well.
I have been working with our superintendent, programs director & my principal to get the word out about the new standards. They want to create a document that will help us transition from the old to the new. If you have any tips or suggestions please send them my way.
I am continuing to work on the procedures manual for the secretary.

I am happy to announce that the nominating committee had 6 nominees for President-elect and 5 nominees for Treasurer-elect. After contacting the nominees, the following people chose to run for office:
These ladies have submitted their information and it will be running in the March TOMT.
I would like to send out a huge thank you to the nominating committee and to the people who considered running and who chose to run. I know it’s a hard decision with a big time commitment, and I appreciate the consideration that everybody took.
I still have been interested in pursuing some sort of on-line voting. With some help from Winnie Miller and her golf association, I checked out www.zoomerang.com. The positive is that it’s on-line (which people now-a-days seem to be more apt to using,) and you can upload your e-mail list for the Zoomerang to send out the website and information for people to vote. The cost is only $99 for a three month time, which I thought would work for our yearly voting. My concern is that when people vote, they can see the results of the voting body. They cannot see how individuals voted, but there is a bar graph that shows the results thus far for each voting item. I would like some discussions as if this is a big deal or if there are other options for voting.
We are gearing up for our 5th summer with the Go-Math group. We will be meeting on February 4th in La Grande to come up ideas for our Summer Institute. This grant has been well-received in Eastern Oregon and I am very excited to be part of the planning/teaching team.
Susan Fisher-Alexander and Nancy Swarat wrote up a press release for Area Recognition Awards. Thank you ladies! We can send this out via e-mail so you all have it.

The following is a short introduction to the nonprofit organization Cathy Brown is starting up and also how OCTM will benefit.
Teachers Inspiring Problem Solvers (TIPS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with teachers and students, to deepen their understanding of mathematics while developing the habits and characteristics of successful problem solvers. We offer a full range of professional development programs from introductory workshops to working within the district several times each month for multiple years. The actual format can be tailored to meet the specific needs of a school or district. · President Patty Sandoz
The process of grant writing to seek funds for professional learning opportunities through the Professional Development Cadre has come to a grinding halt as we impatiently wait for the Internal Revenue Service (service?) to send the needed 2006 tax information. The goal for the Washington Mutual grant and others remains the same: to fund the development of a workshop centered on understanding the new K-8 standards (and eventually 9-12 standards) and then presenting that workshop at least at each of the state's ESDs. To honor and respect teachers' time and commitment the plan will include a stipend.
The Washington State Math Council would like to provide electronic newsletters to their members so I have shared my process with JoAnne Robinson, WSMC President. Updating the membership on local, state, and national news is one of my goals with the newsletter. I also want to entice the membership to explore their TOMTs and the OCTM website.
The candidates for the offices of Treasurer Elect and President Elect have been invited to attend the January 26th Board meeting. This will provide an opportunity for them to become familiar with current Board issues and activities. The candidate for President Elect is Jill Sumerlin and the candidates for Treasurer Elect are Becky Reed and Martha Van Cleave.
The OML co-chairs of Kristin Takano Becker, Theresa Hilkey, and Theresa Trotter (KT^2) met January 12th to plan the 2008 event. I am excited for all the OML participants because of the talents, enthusiasm, and creativeness these three bring to the OML planning process.
The SWAP lesson format will undergo a revision process to speak more directly to the new standards and to what we know about teaching and learning in depth. Please let me know if you would like to participate in this revision.
Between now and the spring meeting all Board positions will be asked to write or revise the procedures associated with that position. Some guidelines will be provided. Submissions will be due by the April 26th meeting. I'll finalize the Procedure Manual over the summer for an August viewing by the Board and posting to the web.
A big thank you is extended to Math Learning Center for their recent generous monetary contribution to OCTM and for the many materials donated for Pizza, Pop, and Problems giveaways.
Thank you to Sarah & Marla for making arrangements for this meeting
