á Approval of Minutes
A
motion by Lois Costine with a second by Molly Smith was made to accept the
minutes of the January 20, 2007 board meeting. The motion passed.
á Area Rep Reports – orally

Discussion Items
á 2007 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta
– Cathy Brown met with the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics. She shared a power point titled: Mathematics from a National Perspective. The information was shared with Governors and State Supervisors.
– Cathy Brown will send her power point to Jackie Cooke to post on the web.
– Lynn Bonser also shared about her trip
– First Steps in Mathematics from Australia will be at OML.
– Giny Christensen – Show Me the Math class using representation not the algorithm.
– WinnieÕs had freebies from NCTM that were available at the back.
á
OML Budget
– Recognized the hard work of the three OML chairs, Marge Burak, Jill Sumerlin and Leslie Graham.
– Winnie Miller handed out the history of OML. This will be a living document.
– Becky Reed put together a budget for OML in 2005. Becky uses the same quick book program that Ross Eells uses to create a three year budget. This will help the next group of chair people.
– Jill shared the working three year budget for 2007 -2009. They will be meeting on Saturday before OML to do more work on this.
á High school award certificates please make sure you take the ones for the high schools in your area
á Leslie also has books available for OML.
10:36 Break
á Oregon Department of Education (ODE) Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) Grant Jon Wiens
¤ Projects funded by this grant must implement content-based professional development in science and/or mathematics. There are a number of possible goals for these projects, but each project must describe how they will evaluate whether their PD leads to increase in student performance.
¤ ODE will have approximately 1.8 million to distribute to various projects in the state.
¤ ODE currently funds seven partnerships, including Oregon Math Leadership Institute (OMLI). Some of these may apply for continued funding.
¤ We plan on distributing at least $600,000 for new projects: new proposals for no more than $300,000 per year for a total of two years.
¤ Grant proposals are due July 10.
- Each project must partner with math, science, or engineering faculty at an institute of higher education.
- The partnership must also include at least one high needs school district (e.g., high needs based on percentage free & reduce lunch, 2nd year AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) improvement status, low statewide assessment scores)
- In the past each project was required to hold a summer institute of no less than 2 weeks. This is not a requirement for new projects.
- Preference given to experimental model, pre-testing & post-testing teachers, control group and test scores, external evaluation component.
¤ For more information on the Oregon MSP program, see http://www.ode.state.or.us/news/announcements/announcement.aspx?=2641 . This news announcement contains a link to the RFP and to our MSP web page.
á Credit cards
– We have credit cards available; who should have the credit cards?
– Ross will be holding the credit card and if people need to buy a big ticket item they will contact Ross to get the number and then send the receipt to Ross.
– The President will also have a credit card.
á Implementation of MET Grant
– We have the money and we need to report to NCTM what our progress is on this grant. Francie Bostwick will email Nancy Rogers to find out if she would like some help with this implementation. Susan Fisher-Alexander offered to help Nancy also.
– Jennifer Cox shared what the MET grant, from the January minutes, – a grant to fund 28 early career teachers with a one year OCTM membership.
– Winnie Miller will resend to area reps what the expectations are for this grant.
á Back of TOMT
– Jackie Cooke, TOMT Editor, was asked how names of math companies & supporters get on the back of TOMT. The board decided who was originally on the back. Teacher to Teacher has asked to be included on the back. Patty Sandoz read the different categories and then the companies listed under each category.
– Discussion about asking groups for a donation, does it have to be Oregon based?
– A lunch discussion will occur to create criteria of what is on the back
