Martha VanCleave Bio

 

1.  Where did you go to college and why did you choose this school?

I attended Linfield College.  I chose to go there because it was a small school not too far from home (Seattle) with good financial support based on scholastic achievement, not need, and I had relatives who had attended Linfield.

 

2.  Where have you taught?  What grade level(s)?

I have taught at McMinnville High School and Yamhill Carlton High School, mostly algebra and general math, substituted throughout Yamhill county and taught at Linfield.

 

3.  What is your current professional focus (job)?

Associate Professor of Mathematics focusing on statitstics, math for elementary teachers and first year college courses.

 

4.  How and why did you get involved with OCTM?

Through TOTOM, Teachers of Teachers of Math, I served as the TOTOM representative to the OCTM board from 2000-2006.

 

5. What kind of math leadership roles have you taken in the Oregon Math

Community? 

Besides serving on the OCTM board as TOTOM rep and now Historian, I have served on OMEC since fall 2006.  I have also been active in the professional development for teachers beginning with work at Oregon Math Leaders with Mike Gould.  I was a co-principal investigator for one of the Oregon Title II B MSP projects from 2004 – 2007, Northwest Regional ESD project.  I have been involved with OMLI as an instructor both in the summer institute and the online academic year course support.

 

6.  What are you passionate about (personal or professional)?

Professionally I am passionate about creating a new generation of mathematics teachers who believe all students can succeed in math if it is taught creatively and effectively.  Personally I am passionate about my pug, Laia, who makes me smile.
