Oregon Math Education Council Representative:  Ann McMahon

 

1. Where did you go to college and why did you choose this school?

Gonzaga, Bachelor of Arts—I chose Gonzaga because of its liberal arts offerings; MAT Lewis & Clark College—I chose Lewis and Clark because of its excellent education department.

 

2. Where have you taught? What grade level(s)?

First through sixth grades with many blended grades such as 2/3, 3/4, 4/5.  Taught in California, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon.

 

3. What is your current professional focus (job)?

Retired elementary teacher.  Currently substituting at Arleta Elementary in Portland Public Schools and also a supervisor of interns for Lewis and Clark College.  I'm a proud member of the PDC, a group of teachers who are dedicated to facilitating professional development for smaller school districts in Oregon.

 

 

4. How and why did you get involved with OCTM?

I moved here from Montana and met Jackie Cooke at the coast conference in 1989.  Then I met Don Fineran at the Northwest Math Conference and he told me about OCTM.

 

5. What kind of math leadership roles have you taken in the Oregon Math Community?

OCTM Publicity Chair on the Board for 13 years; presented at conferences, teacher of teachers, on Professional Development Cadre

 

6. What are you passionate about (personal or professional)?

That elementary teachers and their students see themselves as mathematicians.  Specifically, I'd like to see a math endorsement offered by TSPC for elementary teachers.
