1. Where did you go to college and why did you
choose this school?
I went to the University of Arizona on scholarship,
received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Psychology. Took two
years off to go to paralegal school and worked as a paralegal, then returned to
school at Grand Canyon University for teaching, receiving a Masters in
Education. I chose GCU because it was private, small, and had a great
teacher program.
2. Where have you taught? What grade level(s)?
I taught my first year at Western Sky Middle School
in Arizona, then moved to Oregon and taught two years at Lincoln Savage Middle
School and ten years at Talent Middle School. I've been teaching grades
6-8 during my career although I trained for high school.
3. What is your current professional focus (job)?
I recently served two years as a math specialist for
my district and have returned to the classroom full time, teaching 6th, 7th,
and 8th grades.
4. How and why did you get involved with OCTM?
I sought out OCTM when I moved to Oregon to get
connected. The teachers I've met through OCTM in my region and around the
state have been an irreplaceable support for my professional development as a
teacher and have become great friends.
5. What kind of math leadership roles have you
taken in the Oregon Math Community?
I have been an Area Representative for Southern
Oregon and have recently stepped into serving as Publicity Chair for OCTM.
6. What are you passionate about (personal or
professional)?
I am passionate about helping others (students,
teachers, parents, etc.) see math as ÒsensemakingÓ and a way to learn how to
think.
7. What one word do you think best describes you?
