Jackie Cooke Bio
1. Where did you go to college and why did you
choose this school?
I started out at Oregon College of Education and finished my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Portland State University. It worked for me as a young mom, but it
took me nine years to finish my undergraduate program. I finished my masters
program in a year and a term. Proved to be equally as crazy for a full time
teacher, wife, and mother as the nine years had been for the undergrad program (just
in the opposite direction). These days I try to work on balance in my life.
2. Where have you taught? What grade level(s)?
I have worked in several elementary schools in the Gresham-Barlow School District and before that I taught in private schools. I've taught all elementary grade levels K-5 and 7/8 Language Arts.
3. What is your current professional focus (job)?
Currently I am teaching half time in a 2nd Grade classroom at West Gresham Grade School and for the other half-time I'm working as a math consultant and curriculum writer.
4. How and why did you get involved with OCTM?
In the eighties I was invited to shadow and
eventually co-present with Jay Greenwood as he taught his DMT workshops.
Then, I met Don Fineran who invited me to attend Oregon Math Leaders because
our district wanted to deviate from the standard adoption process and our math
renewal team had to make a presentation to Don.
5. What kind of math leadership roles have you
taken in the Oregon Math Community?
Yikes!
Too many to list.
6. What are you passionate about (personal or professional)?
Writing
7. What one word do you think best describes you?
Nana
