Oregon Math Leaders (OML) Conference
Every August, more than a hundred Oregon math educators who are passionate about teaching mathematics gather at the Oregon Math Leaders conference at Linfield College in McMinnville. The 2019 OML conference is August 2-3. (Interested in next year's? Record a reminder to yourself that it will be in early August 2020, with registration starting in March.)
OML has three goals:
This "math camp" will help you grow as a math educator, and you'll also have lots of fun meeting others from all over our state.
What workshops and talks are included?

For a schedule (subject to possible changes), click here.
Our 2019 keynote speakers are Dr. Jennifer Ruef of the University of Oregon, an expert on social justice, equity, math trauma, and best practices for learning and making sense of mathematics, and STEM teacher educator Maddy Ahearn from University of Oregon and Lane ESD.
This year, we are excited to present a Number Talks session with primary, intermediate, middle, and high school levels, led by teacher educators who are experienced with Number Talks.
Oregon Department of Education (ODE) math curriculum specialist Mark Freed and the new ODE assessment specialist will address state and national trends, provide updates on opportunities statewide to become involved at a local level, and respond to your questions and comments. You will be able to express your concerns and hear how decisions are being made or what's on the table and how to provide your input. They will be addressing elementary and secondary concerns separately, so everyone will get the focused information they need.
Where will I eat and sleep, and how much does the conference cost?
All registrants will be provided with three meals per day at the Linfield College dining hall. Friday evening's meal includes social activities (some mathy, some not) so we can relax together and get to know each other. Saturday evening's meal is an awards banquet, where we will celebrate excellence in mathematics teaching in Oregon.
Registrants who want to stay in housing at Linfield College can stay in dormitory suites with private bedrooms and shared bathrooms, kitchens, and sitting areas. Social activities continue in the dorms; all are welcome! Accommodations are for Friday and Saturday nights, with Thursday night also included upon request.
Through July 6, registration costs are $150 for commuters and $200 for attendees staying in housing. You must be an OCTM member to attend (you can join here). From July 7-16, costs are $50 higher. Registration closes on July 16. Cancellations received by July 16 will be refunded less $25. Cancellations received by August 2 will be refunded less $50. There will be no refund for no shows.
What are some other advantages to attending?
You will receive 16 PDUs for attending the full conference. There is also an option for one graduate credit through Southern Oregon University for a cost of $75; click here to see more information.
Pre-K to Grade 5 educators at OML have the option of registering for free for the Nancy Anderson Memorial Workshop. This year's session, Math Comes in All Shapes and Sizes, will focus on measurement, and will be held twice. Participants in this session will examine where the measurement concepts for K-5 are aligned to major or supporting clusters of standards for each grade, and how concepts for measuring lengths connect to perimeter, area, and volume measurement concepts. Participants will walk away with a collection of materials for students in grades K-5. Participation will be capped, so register early!
Is there any support available from OCTM for my registration costs?
Scholarships are available for OCTM members for support for this and other conferences. See the Scholarships page for more information.
Before OML, on August 1, the fourth annual Authors' Assistance event will be held for writers for OCTM's award-winning journal, The Oregon Math Teacher (TOMT). With editor approval, participants who author several articles for TOMT will have OML registration fees waived. The event will include a meal and editing help from experienced math writing coaches and Authors' Assistance facilitators. Participants must submit ideas for several articles and a draft of one by June 1 and rough drafts by July 15, and will modify and complete their articles at Authors' Assistance. Please see the attached TOMT article for more information. (One small change: Authors' Assistance will begin at 9 am and end with lunch.)
How do I pay with a check or purchasing order, register multiple members at once, and/or register by mail?
If you are registering more than one person or if you wish to pay by check or purchase order, register by mail using the registration form available at this link. Remember that all registrants must be OCTM members, and each must have an OML registration form. Registration confirmation and all future conference information and updates will be sent through email, so registrants need to provide email address(es) that participant(s) can and will regularly check for vital information sent between now and the conference dates. Registrations must be postmarked by July 16.
For purchase orders, please provide a contact number and name for the district business office. If you are using a PO from fiscal year 2018-19, the PO and registration form(s) are due June 30, 2019. If you are using a PO from fiscal year 2019-20, send the PO and registration form(s) by July 6, 2019 to register at the $200 (housing)/$150 (commuter) rates. POs and registrations postmarked after July 6 will be invoiced at the $250/$200 rates.
Registration for this year has been closed, but check back next spring to register for our next OML conference in early August 2020.
