Join with other teachers from across the state who are passionate about teaching mathematics for a couple of days of "math camp" this summer to share your love of teaching. If you are interested in improving your math teaching skills, if you work with other teachers in your building, district, region, or around the state to improve math education for all, or if you like to share activities and resources with your colleagues, then yes, OML is for you! Whether it's developing engaging teaching strategies, uncovering misconceptions about teaching math. Expect to engage in meaningful conversation about this important topic, as well as leave with ways to engage all students in mathematics that respects and celebrates the uniqueness of your students.
We are very excited to announce that our keynote speakers will be Nicole Rigelman and Louise Wilmes.
Nicole Rigelman is a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Portland State University and the Chief Academic Officer for the Math Learning Center. She is a former middle school mathematics teacher and K-12 district mathematics specialist. At the university level, she has taught mathematics methods and content courses for preservice teachers. Rigelman currently serves as coordinator of Portland State University’s Mathematics Instructional Leader Program where she supports content, pedagogy, and leadership development for practicing teachers and teacher leaders. She is passionate about developing partnerships with schools and supporting instruction focused on deepening each and every student’s mathematical thinking and discourse and increasing agency and enthusiasm for problem solving. Rigelman has authored many articles and book chapters, and was co-author for Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations.
Louise Wilmes retired from the Beaverton School District after 41 years teaching Grades K-6 for 37 years and 4 years as Title VI Indian Education Coordinator. She identifies as Native Hawaiian and is a member of The Otoe-Missouria Indian Tribe of Oklahoma. She grew up on Oahu, Hawaii and is a proud graduate of The Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu. She came to the “mainland” to attend Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and graduated with a BA in Elementary Education and then at George Fox University with a MA in Education Administration. At Confluence, she is responsible for coordinating and facilitating professional development workshops for educators to support Tribes and districts delivering Native American curriculum requirements. She also helps facilitate Confluence Field School program discussions for learners of all kinds.

Oregon Department of Education (ODE) assessment specialist Andy Byerley and math curriculum specialist Mark Freed will address state and national trends, provide updates on opportunities statewide to become involved at a local level, and respond to your questions and comments. You will be able to express your concerns and hear how decisions are being made or what's on the table and how to provide your input. They will be addressing elementary and secondary concerns separately, so everyone will get the focused information they need. The Oregon Department of Education has always valued teachers’ knowledge and their important role in developing our students’ understanding of important mathematical concepts. OML’s founding father and past ODE Math Specialist, the late Don Fineran, put it this way, “Together we have strength, sharing, and service.”
